AD Presentation + Project Folders

Please view the Schoology update for links to the folder where you should turn in your American Dream Presentations + Projects.

Instructions for adding materials to the folders:

Option 1: Upload from computer to folder

I think this is the simplest option, but it’s not great for a Google Slides presentation.

  1. Save your work to your computer (H drive, desktop, flash drive, etc.).
  2. Use the link in Schoology to open the folder.
  3. On the left side of the screen, click “New” and then select “File Upload”
  4. Navigate to the location of your file and upload it.
  5. You CAN rename the file AFTER it is uploaded. Files should be named class period – last names of group members (e.g. 1 – Brady, Houle, Laffin).

Option 2: Add the shared folder to your drive and then “move” your file(s)

This option is less simple, but is best if you are sharing a Google Slideshow.

  1. Open your file (Slides, Doc, etc.) in your Google folder.
  2. Be sure that your file is in your drive (as opposed to “shared with me)
    1. Go to “File” and, if needed, click “Add to my drive”
  3. Using the link in the Schoology update, open the folder where you would like to save this file.
  4. When you have the appropriate folder open, click the name of the folder and select “Add to my drive” from the drop-down.
  5. Now go to your file (Slides, Doc, etc.) and go to “File” and select “Make a copy.” This ensures that you have an original in your folder in addition to the one you’re putting in the shared folder. (Note: I know, revert versions, but let’s just do this.)
  6. Now in either the original or your new copy, select “File” and then click “Move to.” Select the shared folder that you just added to your drive and move the file there.

I will be in the English flex lab after school on Tues., 3/26, and before school on Wed., 3/27, if you would like to complete the process with me nearby : )

Thurs 5/2:

Fri 5/11

  • Quiz over whole novel in class

Tips for Monday’s Literature Assessment

First, don’t forget these due dates:

  • Discussion baord replies due by 8 am Monday
  • “Developing Dreams” activity (located where you found the interview handouts) due  Monday at the start of class (you can type in answers and print it or print it and handwrite them).

Assessment tips

  • The assessment is open notes; you will turn in the notes with your assessment. These should be notes that you composed while reading vs. notes you found or whatever.
  • The assessment requires knowledge / understanding of the plot terms we have discussed several times throughout the year, including when you reviewed them for this unit. Please be sure you have a good understanding of the definitions I provided (vs. a general understanding of the terms that may be different from what I provided).
  • Be able to transfer your understanding of these terms from our previous practice with  Fahrehnehit 451, The Scarlet Letter, and A Raisin in the Sun to these works. For example, did you get the climax on these previous works wrong because you used answers from the internet or a definition other than mine? Avoid the same mistake here. Did you lose points for saying something was both a complication and the climax? Avoid the same mistake here.

Scoring

  • 60% MC; 40% short answer
  • Combines with ARITS notes + discussion for an AA grade

Important note: Students who do not make a passing score on the literature study may not work in a group for the project unless they pass the retest opportunity. I can not let someone who has not demonstrated mastery of the literature that is the foundation of the unit work with other people who have since that would put an unfair burden on the people who have mastery of the literature to carry the group.

Questions? Let me know– check in before / after school tomorrow (best option!!), comment here, message on Schoology, or email me (be sure to copy a parent!).

18-19 Synthesis Prompt Approved Topics

Here is the list of pre-approved topics for your synthesis prompt. If you want to choose your own topic, you will have the opportunity to get it approved by Tuesday, 2/4.

If you want to choose your own topic, that is great! You want to choose something that is debatable but not emotional. Past topics on the exam include eminent domain, whether or not college is worth it, eliminating the penny, whether people who speak only English are at a disadvantage, and what should happen with the post office. Debatable, but not emotional.

If you do not get a topic approved by Tuesday, 2/4,  you will need to choose one of these topics.

Approved topics:

  • School uniforms
  • Single-gender education
  • Paying college athletes
  • Eliminating the electoral college
  • Eliminating athletics from public schools
  • Length of the high school school day
  • Requiring high schoolers to volunteer or do community service
  • Free college
  • Nutrition requirements for school lunches
  • Lowering voting age

You may not use these topics:

  • Eliminating the dress code
  • Guns, drugs, or reproductive issues
  • Anything about a specific person

Gatsby + OMM Links / Materials

Complete the following for class on Monday, 2/4:

The Great Gatsby Background

Use your own paper to take notes over the following sources (including the articles!!). You will turn in these notes.

Prezi 1 (mostly historical info)

Prezi 2 (overview/analysis of the book– skip the videos unless you waaaant to watch them)

http://prezi.com/ie6yofgjwu9o/the-great-gatsby/

The next link is a book review of a recent novel based on a trip that Fitzgerald took with his wife. It contains interesting biographical tidbits that touch on Fitzgerald’s writing process.

The next article is certainly revealing! Daisy was more real than you might believe– this article introduces us to the inspiration for the girl whose “voice is full of money.” Years of love letters, unpublished diary entries, and a dad who purportedly said “Poor boys shouldn’t think of marrying rich girls.”

Of Mice and Men background

Since you are already fairly familiar with the Great Depression overall, let’s look at a few specific issues for Of Mice and Men.

Use the KWL handout you received to take notes over the following slideshow and articles.

Add some notes about migrant workers today by reading this article.

Here are two articles about the difficult questions surrounding our criminal justice system and people who are mentally disabled.

And, finally, here is an article that applies to both works in different ways.
